The US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 54, partnering with the cities in south and central Palm Beach County, is offering Safe Boating Classes to the public. These Safe Boating programs provide instruction to boaters at all levels. This class is required to operate any vessel 10 horsepower or greater if you were born after Jan. 1, 1988.
Programs are at the Harvey Oyer Boat Park, 2010 N. Federal Highway, on the last Saturday of each month. The next class is this Saturday, June 29th. Each class starts at 8 a.m. and will satisfy the Florida Department of Natural Resources Boating Operation Requirements, and a Boaters ID Card will be issued by the state. A certificate will be given at the completion of the course. The cost is $36, which includes materials. Topics include navigation, trailering, anchoring, safety, seamanship, line handling, laws and docking. Please call 561-966-2158, 561-736-8821, or 561-715-6061 to reserve a seat, or email email@example.com, or GGAuxPA@Rescueteam.com.
Free Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) will be available this Saturday as well in Boynton Beach. The courtesy Vessel Safety Check (VSC) available in the morning, is performed at your boat by a certified Vessel Examiner, and usually takes up to 30 minutes depending upon the size of your boat. Boats that pass the examination are awarded a distinctive VSC Decal that alerts the Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, Fish & Wildlife, and other law enforcement agencies that your boat was found to be in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws. Why have your boat examined? In a word – safety. You are left with the peace of mind that your boat meets minimum safety standards and that in an emergency, you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help. You may learn a few things and finally, your insurance rates may be lowered – check with your agent.
More information on VSC's are available through the Coast Guard Auxiliary @ 818-7905.
On July 13th, Vessel Examiners will be on hand at the Lake Ida Park West, 1455 Lake Ida Road in Delray Beach, from 10 am till 2pm. We will examine all boats, kayaks, paddleboards, Personal Watercraft, ect. in order to insure all requirements are met. There is no penality if you are not awarded a decal.
